From Amazon.co.uk In the early to mid-1980s there arose in Britain an earnest group of new prog-rock bands populated by musicians who had spent their teenage years listening to The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. They made albums with enigmatic-sounding titles packed with epic 20-minute songs. Marillion were far and away the most commercially successful, but others flourished to some degree in their wake: Pallas, Twelfth Night and IQ to name but three. Tales from the Lush Attic, IQ’s debut from 1983 (exactly the same vintage as Script for a Jester’s Tear), wears its Genesis influences even more openly than Marillion: singer Peter Nicholls does a better Peter Gabriel impersonation than Phil Collins, and the band trade Mike Rutherford/Tony Banks riffs with gleeful abandon. It’s all capably executed with a lot of spirit, not to mention a peppering of wit (a two-minute keyboard solo has the memorable title ?My Baby Treats Me Right ’Cos I’m a Hard Lovin’ Man All Night Long?). And if the band must surely now regret their dubious New Romantic image on display in the booklet photos, the music remains a tribute to the enduring legacy of early Genesis--a legacy that IQ’s subsequent records (including the two-disc concept album Subterranea) have continued to acknowledge. --Mark Walker
